Preventative Dentistry

The best way to ensure dental health for life and to protect against oral disease is to attend regularly scheduled cleanings. At your bi-annual examination, our dentists will clean and check your teeth, as well as look for signs of tooth decay, and screen for oral cancer and more severe dental issues.

Our Preventative Services include:

Professional dental cleaning. The cleaning process will begin a procedure called “scaling,” the removal of calculus, a layer of hardened plaque which has formed on the teeth and firmly attaches itself to the tooth surface. This will be removed from above and below the gum line with specially designed dental tools. Our hygienists will then remove plaque, an insidious film on the teeth that harbors bacteria and harmful toxins. Tooth brushing will follow, after which our experienced hygienists will perform a teeth polishing procedure that will remove stains and leave your teeth looking shiny and feeling smooth.

Dental exam. Each exam is performed by a board-certified dentist and is essential for the prevention of tooth decay and bone loss. The exam also aids in the detection of tumors, cysts and oral cancer. During a dental exam, the dentist will check the teeth, tongue, lips, jaw and throat for signs of issue or disease, as well as areas of the face and neck where problems can develop. Tooth surfaces and gums will be examined for signs of cavities, periodontal disease or decay. For patients with crowns or fillings, each previously performed treatment area will be checked to ensure health of existing restorations.

Diagnostic X-rays. Skilled X-ray technicians will take advanced oral pictures, using digital technology to ensure low radiation exposure. Results are examined to determine comprehensive dental health.

Oral Instruction. Our dental team will ensure that you know how to properly care for your teeth at home, beyond your routine visits. In addition to reviewing your medical history and evaluating your personal dental risks, our staff will instruct you in optimal home dental care, and provide tips and tools in treating your teeth, both while brushing and flossing and beyond.
